Ruth Orkin
American
Born Boston, 1921
Died New York, 1985
One of America's greatest female photojournalists, Ruth Orkin is justly acclaimed for her unforgettable images of New York, Hollywood and Europe, most notably from the 1940s, 50s and 60s.
Her candid, humanist approach ensured she was a regular contributor to Life, Look, This Week andCosmopolitan. However, many of her most compelling images were made without assignments, featuring ordinary people at parades, dime stores, playgrounds and stations.
A major retrospective of Ruth Orkin's work was held at the International
Center of Photography, New York in 1995, and she is represented
in numerous permanent collections including the Museum of Modern
Art, New York, Center for Creative Photography, Tucson and Museum
of Art, Hamburg.
