Kiss Me Quick
20 June - 20 July 2002
These images celebrate the waning of post-war austerity, with the
working classes set to enjoy themselves and live for the moment.
Pubs, dance halls and glittering new seaside resorts were the destinations
for countless thrill-seeking weekenders determined to forget the
daily grind of factories and mills. These wonderfully candid pictures
show them tasting the glamour of the North-East's new casinos, or
betting a few bob on the horses or bingo.
The ultimate pleasure trip for many was to that quintessentially
English resort, Blackpool, home to sideshows, tattoo parlours and
donkey rides. These photographs capture would-be playboys and good-time
girls running riot in seaside arcades and pubs, whilst old-age pensioners
take a stately walk along the prom. There are occasional glimpses
of romance, as well as a grimly humorous determination to have a
good time, despite the rain. Combining seaside-postcard sauciness
and old-fashioned innocence, they are a far cry from Blackpool's
new image as England's 'Lancs Vegas'.
This nostalgic and revealing show includes some 50 rarely seen
images by photographers including Alfred Gregory, Ken Lambert and
Colin Jones.
