Karat- Sky Over St. Petersburg
Wolfgang Mueller's photographs, taken during the run-up to St.
Petersburg's anniversary celebrations, tell the stories of children
and teenagers who live in the roofs and attics of disused buildings,
five or six floors above the city's streets. It is here that they
hope to find some sort of a home where they can sleep, take drugs
without being apprehended, and make money from prostitution. Many
of them have escaped from apathetic parents or decaying orphanages.
"Karat" is the brand name of a shoe polish containing solvents that
many of them inhale.
A book of the same title published by Nazraeli Press accompanies
this exhibition.
